Introduction of Kalpeshwar Temple

Located at an altitude of 2200 meters(7218 fts) above the sea level, Kalpeshwar temple is one of the Panch Kedar temples located in Kedar Khnad. Here lord shiva’s matted tress (Jata) is worshipped and lord shiva is known as Jatadhar or Jateshwar as it is believed that when lord Shiva disappeared from Kedar village his five body parts appeared at five different locations. As per holy scriptures it is believed that lord Shiva hair appeared at Kalpeshwar dham. It is considered as the fifth and last temple in Panch Kedar dham circuit. Kalpvriksh tree located in the vicinity of Kalpeshwar temple. The head priest at this temple is Dasnamis or Gossains, disciples of Adi Shankaracharya. This is the only temple which remains open throughout the year for devotees unlike other temples in Panch kedar which remains close for almost six months during winter.The river found beside this temple is known as kalpganga also known as Heernawati river.

History of Kalpeshwar Temple

The Kalpeshwar temple’s history is very interesting because it is Dedicated to Lord Shiva.As per the historical facts and mythological stories it is believed that when Pandavas started searching for lord shiva to attain atonement from their sin of killing their blood relatives and teachers, lord shiva tried to avoid them. So he first escaped from Kasi to reside in a place now known as Guptkashi. Later when pandavas reached to Guptkashi lord shiva got disappeared and went to a small village in mountains, known as Kedar. But stubborn Pandavas also went to Kedar village then lord shiva take a form of Nandi and tried to disappear. So he started entering inside the earth but Bhima (one of the pandavas) hold him from his hump and that bull get divided into five parts and appeared at five different locations in Uttarakhand. Pandavas had constructed temple at these locations and worshipped lord shiva to please him. These five temples are now collectively known as panch kedar. Kalpeshwar is considered as the last leple of panch kedar and it is believed that here hairs of lord shiva appeared. Shivling here at Kalpeshwar is also known as Jateshwar maharaj.
