The trek starts at Gangotri, which is at a lower height of 3,150 meters (10,335 feet) above sea level. Gangotri is a sacred place and is where many people begin their journey to the Gaumukh Glacier and Tapovan. Since Gangotri is lower, it’s easier to start the trek here. But as you go higher towards Tapovan, the air gets thinner, so you need to give your body time to adjust to avoid feeling sick from the height

The distance from Gangotri to Tapovan is around 20 kilometers. The Gangotri Tapovan Trek all together is about forty kilometers to be covered on foot. Lower Body Strength Training

  • Squats: Great for building leg strength. Try to do 15 repetation with 3 sets daily
  • Lunges: Target your thighs and glutes. This also you need to do 3 sets with 15 repetation each.
  • Step-ups: Helps prepare for ascents during the trek. 3 sets with 10 repetation each will be enough.
  • Upper Body Strength Training

  • Push-ups: Strengthen your upper body for carrying a backpack. Start with 2-3 prushups with 3 repetation each and try to achieve atleast 10 pushups in each set.
  • Planks: Improve core stability for long treks and strenthen your abdominal muscles. Start with doing it atleast for 20 seconds and try to achieve 1 minute goal in next 15 days.

    By Air

    The nearest airport to Gangotri is Jolly Grant airport which is also known as Dehradun airport. It is a small airport located in the lap of Himalaya. But almost all the major companies like Indigo, Air India, Spicejet etc. have regular flights from all the major cities. If you don't get any direct flight from this airport then you can also take a brake journey to IGI (Indira Gandhi International) airport in New Delhi. From where you can take a connecting flightflight for Dehradun or continue your remaining journey by road.

    By Train

    The nearest railway station to Gangotri town is a Dehradun railway station which is located at a distance of 237 kms from this town. From there you can continue your journey by road. If you don't get a direct train to Dehradun from your home town, then you can also try for Haridwar, Rishikesh or Roorkee. All these cities are sister cities and are located in close vicinity to each other.

    By Road

    Road is the only mode to reach Gangotri town after Dehradun. It is well connected by National Highway. From Dehradun, we have majorly three options to travel. They are as follows:

  • Buses: Local transport including regular buses are available from Rishikesh to Uttarkashi and from there to Gangotri.
