    Strength training tips

The highest altitude attained at the Har Ki Dun trek is 11600 feet (3535 meters), with a total trekking distance of 52 km, which is to be covered in 5 days. The gradient all along the trek is decent but steep at some places, so we can grade it as a medium difficulty level trek. Although a beginner can join for this trek, to enjoy the trek to its fullest, one needs to prepare for it well in advance. If you are serious about the Har ki dun trek and planning for it, then you should start preparing for it at least 15 days before your trip date. Here are some tips to prepare for the Har ki dun trek. You can practice them to complete the trek comfortably.

    Lower body strength training

On the Har ki dun trek, we are going to cover 8–12 km of distance daily on a medium to steep gradient. So your lower body has to work the most, so training it first is also the most important. Here are some of the best exercises suitable for lower body training. You need to do it on a daily basis. Start it initially with one set each with ten repetitions, and try to attain a target of three sets daily with fifteen repetitions.

    Squats

Keep your upper body stiff and your hand either behind your head or stretch it straight in front of you at the shoulder lever. Now sit down without moving making any movement in the upper body and go up. Go slow and do it for 45 seconds. This will strengthen your quadriceps, calves, and hamstrings and will improve your flexibility to the lower body.

    One leg lean squats

Now again keep your upper body and right leg stiff and sit on the left leg without making any movement to your upper body. Now go up and keep your left leg stiff and sit on your right leg. Go slow and keep repeating this for the next 45 seconds.

    Lunges

Keep your hands down, and upper body straight. Put your right leg forward and drop your body down without making any movement to your upper body and bending your knees. Do it 15 times and then switch your legs and again repeat it for the next 15 times. Lunges increase muscle mass to build up strength and tone your body, especially your core, butt, and legs.

    Upper body strength training

It is equally important to train your upper body as you are going to carry your backpack on your own. If you don't train your upper body, especially your shoulder, you may not be able to enjoy your trip. So here are a few simple but most effective exercises that will strengthen your shoulder.

    Pushups

Keeping your face toward the ground and raising and lowering the body with the straightening and bending of the arms while keeping the back straight and supporting the body on the hands and toes. Try to do at least 4-5 pushups initially, and target doing 25-30 pushups daily. This will strengthen your arms and sholders.

    Plank

Lie straight with your face toward the ground, now hold your body on your forearms and feet keeping your complete body straight. Try to hold in this position for at least 30 seconds. This will help you burn your belly fat and will strengthen your chest and shoulder.

    Tricep Dip

Sit down on your hip with legs straight touching the ground. Keep your hands 1feet behind your hip and try to lift your body. Keep doing it for 45 seconds. This exercise is to strengthen the upper body and specially your triceps and increase the range of motion of the body.

    Note

10 minutes of warmup and rafting are a must, so stretch your body properly before starting your exercise. In addition to these exercises, also do brisk walking for at least 30 minutes and try to achieve a goal of covering 5 km in 30 minutes. This will help you in building your stamina and strength.
