Yatra Overview

Kedarnath is a town in the state of Uttarakhand that got popular because of the Kedarnath Yatra being carried out each year to visit the temple of Lord Shiva. The literal meaning of the word Kedarnath is 'lord of the field.' It has been a pilgrimage center since ancient times.

As per our study on this holy pilgrimage spot, one of the earliest references to Kedarnath temple was found in Skanda Puran (7th–8th century), which referred to it as a place where Lord Shiva released the holy water of Ganga from his matted hair, resulting in the formation of Ganga.

On summit of this trek, you reach the Kedarnath temple, located in the Garhwal Himalayan region near the Mandakini River. Because of extreme weather conditions, this temple is only open for a limited period of pilgrimages.

Kedarnath Yatra 2025 Starting And Ending Date

Yatra will start soon for the year 2025, covering the sacred Hindu shrine of Uttarakhand. Due to the intense weather fluctuations and celestial body movement, the head priest of Ukhimath in Uttarakhand decides on the starting and ending dates of the Kedarnath Yatra. Like every year, this year is no different, and the head priest will announce the Kedarnath Yatra 2025 starting and ending dates on the occasion of Mahashivratri

Generally, Temple reopens three days after the occasion of Akshay Tritiya because it is believed that any fast, donation to the poor, and prayers done on this day award wonders and prosperity to the believers. Therefore, Akshay Tritiya is a popular Hindu festival that is considered an auspicious day for starting new projects and ventures. As per reliable sources, it is assumed that the Temple will open on May 03, 2025 (Final Opening date will be published once it is anounced).

After the opening of the temple, daily rituals, aartis, and worship are performed inside the temple for the next six months. When winter comes, due to the heavy snowfall and harsh weather, the whole region is covered with a thick blanket of snow. Hence, the deity of the temple is transferred to the Omkareshwar temple of the Ukhimath, and the doors of the Kedarnath temple are closed for everyone on the occasion of Bhai Dhooj. Tentative date of closing of temple is 23rd October 2025 (Final Closing Date will be published once it is anounced)

Kedarnath Mythology

Kedarnath is a well-known shrine for Lord Shiva devotees with a history of almost more than 1000 years old. According to Mahabharat and Kedarnath Mythology it is believed that the Pandavas have built the Kedarnath Temple and worshipped Lord Shiva to please him and beg mercy for the wrongdoings of killing their blood relatives.

However, Lord Shiva didn't want to release them so easily, so he disguised himself as a bull and roamed in the Himalayas. It is then Pandavas found out, and while escaping from Bhima, Lord Shiva dived into the ground, and Bhima could get only his hump. From then, the Kedarnath temple is prayed for the jyotirlinga. The other body parts emerged in Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar, combinedly known as Panch Kedar.

Initially, the temple was built by Pandavas, but if Kedarnath Mythology is to be believed later, Adi Shankaracharya restored and revived the glory of the shrine and it's a stron believe that even today Lord Shiva stays in this temple.
